Important Halloween Pet Safety Tips for Our Furry Friends

Important Halloween Pet Safety Tips for Our Furry Friends

It’s Spooky Season once again- for many it’s their favorite time of year. There’s nothing better than dressing up on a crisp fall evening and going to parties with friends, or opening the front door to crowds of little ones in their costumes. Halloween is supposed to be fun for the entire family, but sometimes our furry friends get overlooked, or just are expected to go along with the program without consideration for what’s actually best for them.

There are a number of activities, foods, decorations, and costumes that might be tasty and fun for the humans, but may actually be unpleasant, dangerous, or even deadly for pets and other animals. Before you decorate your house, dress up your pooch or your kitty, or set out those treats for everyone to enjoy, there are some things to take into consideration.

First, the excitement and action of Halloween might just be too much for some animals to bear. Pets with a predisposition for stress may find the rushing around, the doorbells, the unfamiliar sights, smells, and sounds to be too taxing. There are pet products available to take some of the stress out of the holiday. In such circumstances, a calming CBD pet chew, or a few calming drops of a CBD tincture in the food bowl may help relieve some of the stress.

Some Treats are Tricky for Pets
As tempting as that big bowl of candy might be for you, it may be just as enchanting for the furry ones. But certain foods and treats are toxic for pets. It is recommended that dogs not eat Halloween treats at all. Chocolate and candies containing Xylitol are toxic for dogs. Grapes, raisins, and Macadamia nuts, Walnuts, raw Cashews, and Pistachios are also dangerous for dogs. Dogs aren’t picky about unwrapping treats, and paper, plastic and foil wrappers can cause bowel obstructions.

Cats are much more finicky, but every bit as curious. The same restrictions for dogs are a good rule of thumb for cats. Any treat containing sugar should be avoided with pets in general. If you want to treat your pet to something special, there are quality CBD soft treats available for both dogs and cats.

Dressing up- Yes or No?
There’s nothing cuter than a good pet costume. But before you go stuffing your furry friends into walking tacos or Batman costumes, consider your pet’s general tolerance for such. There’s no point in trying to get your pet to show off a costume if it makes them stressed or miserable. Look for obvious signs of stress in your pet, and be certain of their level of comfort before you take them outside. A stressed animal may run away and hide.

Decoration Do’s and Don’ts
Everyone enjoys a well-decorated house, and Halloween is where many let their decorating skills shine. But when decorating, be aware of potential hazards.

Cautions:

  • Lit candles are a potential hazard.
  • Strings of lights, ropes, and wires can be tripping hazards for people and pets.
  • Beware also of potential toxins such as glow sticks which can rupture, and other liquids that shouldn’t be consumed.
  • Beware of fake cobwebs, as they can cause entanglement hazards for not only pets, but for birds, squirrels, bats, and other small animals.

Do:

  • When you are finished with your pumpkin, remember to toss it into a wooded patch where the pulp and seeds can be enjoyed by wildlife.

Remember every member of your household for every season. Be aware of their needs and their comfort. The Hemp Pharmacist is available to recommend supplements for every member of the family 757-577-1024.

CBD vs CBN: Key Differences, Similarities, and Potential Uses

CBD vs CBN: Key Differences, Similarities, and Potential Uses

The popularity of hemp-derived compounds for the relief of a variety of physical symptoms is increasing exponentially. Recent changes in the laws regulating the use of cannabis products in consumer products removed hemp products containing less than 0.3 percent THC (the psychoactive compound in marijuana responsible for the “high”) from the legal definition of marijuana as per the Controlled Substances Act.

These changes have fueled more thorough and focused research into the viability of hemp-based compounds as having clinical potential. There is an ever-increasing body of knowledge becoming available, and clinical trials are revealing how cannabis-based compounds can be used to develop medications to treat a growing number of symptoms.

When exploring the world of hemp-based products, there are a couple of key compounds that get most of the coverage. Two of the most talked-about compounds are CBD (cannabidiol) and CBN (cannabinol). While the names may be difficult to distinguish from one another, they originate from the same place, and they both interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system. Their effects can often be similar, yet with a couple of key differences.

What is CBD (cannabidiol)?

Of approximately 150 identified compounds found in the cannabis plant, CBD or cannabidiol is second to THC in abundance. Due to its proportional presence, it is one of the better known, and one of the most studied compounds. As opposed to the psychoactive effects of THC, CBD has a counterbalancing regulatory effect.

Of the developed hemp-derived compounds, CBD is considered to provide the most abundant potential for wellness benefits. People have been seeking CBD products for pain relief more frequently than ever, and CBD has been shown to be effective in stress reduction for dogs. There are many cannabis-derived products with CBD as their primary ingredient, and can be introduced in a variety of ways:

  • Smoking or vaping- CBD for pain and stress relief
  • Orally- oils, edibles, and beverages for pain relief and stress management
  • Topically- includes creams and lotions for relief from pain and itching and CBD oil for arthritis as cosmetics and skincare applications.

What is CBN (cannabinol)?

One of the lesser-known phytocannabinoids, CBN or cannabinol, is produced by the degradation of the THC molecule through the process of decarboxylation (prolonged exposure to heat and oxygen). While up to 75% or more of the potency of THC may be lost during this process, CBN is not considered to be entire without some psychoactive potential.

Unlike CBD which has no psychoactive effect, CBN can potentially produce psychoactive reactions in higher dosages, so caution is required. CBN is gaining recognition for its potential in enhancing the “Entourage Effect” of the application of full-spectrum cannabinoids. Among the compounds being studied, CBD is considered to be particularly effective in creating a relaxing, sleep-enhancing effect.

CBD and CBN products are available in isolates (which contain CBD or CBN only), broad-spectrum (containing a number of cannabis compounds, but no THC), or full spectrum (which contains all available compounds, but by law may contain less than 0.3% THC).

As with all nonprescription cannabis-derived products, they are not regulated by the FDA. Some products may contain inaccurate or misleading labeling or content descriptions. It is best that you consult a professional CBD pharmacist like the professionals at The Hemp Pharmacist at 757-577-1024. They are available to make recommendations specific to your needs.

Note- For informational purposes only. Please consult your physician before beginning or discontinuing any medication. CBD or CBN should not be used with any medication containing a “grapefruit warning”.  Commercial cannabis compounds may, by law, contain no more than 0.3 % of THC. While this is not enough THC to create a psychoactive effect, it may still be detectable in some tests. If you are prohibited from using any product containing THC or any hemp-derived products, CBD/CBN treatments may not be an option.

CBD Dosage: How Much CBD Should You Take?

CBD Dosage: How Much CBD Should You Take

The popularity of hemp-derived products as an alternative or adjunct treatment for a variety of disorders is growing exponentially. A peer-reviewed study published in 2017 found CBD to be a relatively safe and effective treatment of certain symptoms associated with various problems. Research is unlocking the possibilities of hemp-based compounds as a potential treatment for additional disorders.

What is CBD? How Does it Work?

CBD, or Cannabidiol, is one of over 90 compounds to date identified as phytocannabinoids. Cannabinoids interact with receptors in the endocannabinoid system in the bodies of mammals. The endocannabinoid system is responsible for the regulation of communication between cells in the body and influences appetite, inflammation, mood, and memory. While CBD doesn’t specifically bind to either CB1 or CB2 (primary cannabinoid receptors), it is found to affect serotonin receptors in certain concentrations. It is noted that CBD oil for pain relief is among the most popular usages.

How to use CBD?

CBD is available in a growing number of applications and delivery methods, such as full-spectrum CBD oil tinctures, CBD oil roll-ons, topical CBD creams and oils, gummies, vapes, and sublingual tinctures. New products are entering the market. Consult your CBD pharmacy professional for additional information about what products may be best for you.

As with any supplement or substance, it is always advisable to begin with a low dosage and work up to find the optimum dosage for your body type and specific symptoms. CBD has been found to be safe for humans in moderate amounts. Up to 1,500 mg per day is generally well tolerated by most people. It is considered low-risk and often recommended as a supplemental treatment. Side effects are usually minor, including dry mouth, dizziness, fatigue, and abdominal upset.

CBD is commonly available as:

  • Isolates: This contains CBD and no other compounds.
  • Broad-spectrum CBD: This includes other compounds found in the cannabis plant but contains no THC.
  • Full-spectrum CBD: This contains trace amounts of THC, the psychoactive compound in marijuana. Federal law prohibits more than 0.3% THC in any commercially available CBD or hemp-derived product. Full-spectrum CBD is the most highly recommended type due to the “entourage effect,” the compounds work in concert to provide maximum results where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

CBD Dosage Recommendations

Finding the correct effective dosage will vary by body weight, lifestyle, and exposure to other substances. Alcohol, THC, opioids, and amphetamines compromise the endocannabinoid system and may require a period of abstinence or higher dosages of CBD. Caffeine, nicotine, NSAIDs, and the cortisol resulting from chronic exposure to stress can affect the dosage needed.

A good rule of thumb for beginners is to consult your physician before beginning any treatment regimen. As for dosage- begin slowly and increase as needed. Your results may vary.

Is CBDA more effective than CBD?

Is CBDA more effective than CBD?

When beginning a journey into the world of cannabis-based supplements, there seems to be a growing amount of information to process, and new products are regularly springing onto the market. There are often confusing and contradictory claims about the benefits and uses of various cannabis derivatives. While the FDA still has not approved the vast majority of cannabis-based compounds for clinical or medicinal use, recent changes in the laws governing cannabis have revealed many compounds as having promise in providing benefits and helping to relieve stress for many users. The commercial viability of these compounds and products has spurred new research, development, and clinical study rounds.

Phytocannabinoids

These are a class of various unique compounds found naturally in the cannabis plant. There are over 100 different types of phytocannabinoids that have currently been identified. The concentration of many of these compounds will vary among individual cannabis strains and often differ with how they are grown and handled. While it is the source of the compounds that cannabis is best known for, cannabigerolic acid (CBGA) is often referred to as “The Mother of all Cannabinoids.” Subsequent cannabinoid compounds are transformed through decarboxylation, where the compounds are activated by exposure to heat and oxygen.

Introducing CBDa

One of the products to emerge in the cannabis-based supplement market is one of the most basic. CBDa, or cannabidiolic acid, is the base compound from which the more familiar CBD (cannabidiol) is derived. While CBD may be the more popular and well-known cannabis compound in current use, CBDa as a precursor and as a viable therapeutic compound is currently undergoing further study. Studies have shown that CBDa is effective against nausea and has effects similar to antidepressant medications. By attaching to a specific serotonin receptor that governs the response to nausea and stress, CBDa is estimated to be up to 1000% more effective in relieving those symptoms than CBD alone.

The benefits of a full spectrum CBDa such as Ananda Professional CBDa Gels, as demonstrated by the Entourage Effect, bring all of the therapeutic properties of cannabis compounds for relief of symptoms of stress, sleeplessness, and nausea.

The unstable nature of CBDa and its decarboxylates at room temperature have made it difficult to work with. Despite being abundant in raw form, CBDa is often not accessible to most cannabis users due to the common consumption methods. Since CBDa transforms into CBD with the introduction of heat and oxidation, there is no smokable application for CBDa. CBDa softgels would be an easy way to access the benefits of this compound.

There are research studies underway to develop methodologies for making the CBDa molecule more stable for commercial purposes. The potential therapeutic benefits of CBDa are coming to light. One clinical trial has shown CBDa to be more effective than a commercially available medication for nausea commonly prescribed to chemotherapy recipients.

Note- For informational purposes only. Please consult your physician before beginning or discontinuing any medication. CBD or CBDa should not be used with any medication containing a “grapefruit warning.”  Commercial cannabis compounds may, by law, include no more than 0.3 % of THC. While this is not enough THC to create a psychoactive effect, it may still be detectable in some tests. If you are prohibited from using any product containing THC or any hemp-derived products, CBD/CBDA treatments may not be an option.

CBD for Beauty and Skincare

CBD for Beauty and Skincare

There has been a steady growth in the types of health and personal care products on the market that feature hemp-derived compounds as a featured ingredient. Beauty and skincare products containing CBD are becoming more popular and are appearing on store shelves everywhere. A product such as CBD moisturizing body butter would be a great choice to start your CBD skin care program.

What is CBD?

Cannabidiol or CBD is a naturally-occurring compound found in cannabis plants. But unlike its buzzy cousin THC (the compound responsible for the cannabis “high”), CBD lacks the psychoactive properties. Recent changes in the legal codes in the US have made certain hemp compounds legal for use in many products, and there is a growing body of research that shows the beneficial properties of CBD in certain applications.

How does CBD Work?

A study from 2014 has shown that CBD has a probable anti-inflammatory effect on the specific skin cells known as sebocytes that are responsible for producing sebum.

Sebum, along with fatty substances known as lipids mix together to create a protective barrier on the surface of the skin. While sebum plays an important role in protecting the skin from UV radiation and provides protection from certain types of staph infections, the overproduction of sebum can lead to oily skin.

Dead skin cells when mixed with excess sebum often cause a clog in the pores, trapping bacteria, and can result in blackheads and pimples. An exfoliating face mask with CBD can ease the overproduction of sebum in the facial skin.

CBD has also been shown to reduce inflammation in certain types of tissue. It shows promise in helping to reduce pain, swelling and irritation from existing skin conditions or periodic breakouts. A product such as Koi CBD Facial Serum would be ideal.

Oxidative stress is recognized as a contributing factor in the aging process. CBD has been shown to have proven antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties, and can contribute to the reduction of aging in the skin.

What to Look For?

Not all products containing hemp products are equal. Beware of the “greenwashing” trend in the cannabis product market. Many companies are trying to take advantage of the popularity of CBD in personal healthcare products, and are making false claims about their ingredients.

Check the product labels for true CBD content when shopping for CBD skin care products. While hemp seed oil has excellent skin moisturizing properties, it is not CBD. While shopping for products such as CBD balancing facial toner, check the ingredients list. Even products with a higher content of CBD by milligram may have lower quality ingredients which may not benefit your skin.

Also check the manufacturer’s product information for lab results to ensure that products such as an exfoliating face mask with CBD  made with extracts that were farmed without harmful chemicals. And always follow the usage directions to allow for maximum effectiveness. The addition of CBD body care products into your health and beauty product selection can provide additional benefits for your skin. Shop wisely, and you’ll see the difference.

Call us today to get the CBD skin care products that will suit your needs.

Note- For informational purposes only. Please consult your physician before beginning or discontinuing any medication, or if you have questions about the use of health and beauty, or personal care products containing hemp-derived compounds. CBD should not be used with any medication containing a “grapefruit warning”.  Commercial cannabis compounds may, by law, contain no more than 0.3 % of THC. While this is not enough THC to create a psychoactive effect, it may still be detectable in some tests. If you are prohibited from using any product containing THC or any hemp-derived products, CBD treatments may not be an option.

CBN – A Cannabis Compound With Beneficial Properties

CBN – A Cannabis Compound With Beneficial Properties

There is a rapidly-developing body of knowledge available in the world of supplements with reported therapeutic benefits that are being developed with extracts of plants from the cannabis family. While the potentially beneficial properties of cannabidiol (CBD) are more well known, there is another compound derived from the cannabis plant that is getting new attention for its attributes.

Cannabinol (CBN) is one of the over 100 chemical compounds found in the cannabis plant. While CBN shares a similar molecular structure with its more well-known cousin CBD, its effects and benefits are now being studied with greater focus and reported therapeutic benefits are coming to light. One of the more popular uses is cannabinol for sleep.

The Difference Between CBD and CBN

Both CBD and CBN are compounds that interact with the endocannabinoid system in the body. This system is reported to have a regulatory effect on certain systems in the body such as sleep, mood, and appetite. Many endocannabinoids occur naturally in the body. CBD and CBN are compounds that bind to the body’s CB2 receptors. While related, these compounds interact differently within the body. THC is the most well-understood compound found in the cannabis plant, and the compound responsible for the psychoactive effect of marijuana. THC is also the base compound for CBN. CBN is extracted by degrading THC by exposure to heat and oxygen, changing its chemical profile, and ridding it of many of its intoxicating properties. While studies suggest that CBN is non-psychoactive, it still retains between 10% to 20% of the potency of THC, and therefore there exists a potential for abuse, especially in larger than recommended doses. CBN, on the other hand, is entirely non-psychoactive, regardless of dose.

Benefits of CBN

There are promising reports of CBN having real potential as a sleep aid. There was a study in 2019: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31158702/ that found that combination of CBD and CBN was effective in relieving pain in rats. Another rodent study in 2005 found that CBN was found to be effective in slowing the onset of ALS (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or Lou Gherig’s Disease). There is also ongoing research in rodents that suggests the CBN may be effective in reducing the inflammation associated with arthritis. Further human studies are required to confirm these initial results. The Entourage Effect (the cumulative effect of multiple compounds) is reported to enhance the effectiveness of these compounds. CBN (cannabinol) shows real promise for aiding with sleep.

While CBN is expensive compared to CBD, CBN products are becoming more available in:

Note- Please consult your physician before beginning or discontinuing any medication. CBD should not be used with any medication containing a “grapefruit warning”.  There is not enough available research concerning drug interactions with CBN. Commercial cannabis compounds may, by law, contain no more than 0.3 % of THC. While this is not enough THC to create a psychoactive effect, it may still be detectable in some tests. If you are prohibited from using any product containing THC, CBD/CBN treatments may not be an option.

CBD vs THC: What You Need to Know About Medical Cannabis

CBD vs THC: What You Need to Know About Medical Cannabis

Mankind has developed a relationship with medicinal plants that date back as far as civilization itself. Botanical remedies for many medical conditions originated in antiquity and are still being used today. The knowledge and use of cannabis for medical, religious, and recreational use date back as far as 6000 BC. Hemp, the botanical cousin of the marijuana plant, was being used as a raw material for ropemaking in Europe and the Americas for centuries, and the importance of hemp rope in shipping and textiles resulted in the cultivation of hemp being mandatory in some of the early colonies of the early United States.

The medical benefits of cannabis have been long established. In 1830, a doctor in Ireland identified cannabis extracts as being useful in lessening the pain and discomfort of Cholera. By the late 1800s, patent medicines containing cannabis extracts (many containing the psychoactive cannabinoid THC) were popular in Europe and the United States. Social pressures stemming from the use of marijuana as a recreational drug led to its prohibition in the United States and other countries in the early 20th century. With a few exceptions, this prohibition resulted in significant restrictions on the use of cannabis in medical research.

Recent discoveries and reexaminations of the medical properties of cannabinoids,  primarily cannabidiol (or CBD) and the endocannabinoid system itself, have resulted in reforming many of the laws concerning prohibitions on the use of cannabis for medical research.

What is THC and is it included in CBD medication?

There is an extant body of knowledge covering the physical effects of cannabis. This largely concerns the effects of THC that cause the feeling of being “high” and was the primary reason for the prohibition of the plant. THC is only one of the 140+ known cannabinoid compounds in cannabis, and these compounds are undergoing careful study to determine their potential medical applications. CBD compounds are legally prohibited from containing any more than 0.3% of THC.

Medical Uses for CBD Compounds

CBD for Sleep and Stress: CBD gummies and CBD tinctures are two of the most popular CBD compound products. There is research that supports the use of CBD to reduce stress. CBD has been found effective in reducing stress levels in test subjects.

CBD for Soothing the Body: Studies into the analgesic properties of CBD are yielding positive results in calming the body. Studies also suggest that there is a possibility for future use of CBD for chronic problems.

CBD for Pets: CBD dog treats and CBD for cats have been found to relieve stress from travel, separation, and distress from medical conditions or surgeries. To learn more about our CBD products, please call 757-577-1024.

Note- Please consult your physician before beginning or discontinuing any medication. CBD should not be used with any medication containing a “grapefruit warning.”

CBD compounds may, by law, contain no more than 0.3 % of THC. While this is not enough THC to create a psychoactive effect, it may still be detectable in some tests. If you are prohibited from using any product containing THC, CBD treatments may not be an option.

How Does Full Spectrum CBD Oil Help for Pain Management

How Does Full Spectrum CBD Oil Help for Pain Management

With the increased awareness of the dangers of opioid abuse, medical professionals and pain sufferers are actively searching for additional remedies that do not carry the potentially dangerous characteristics of opioids.

Cannabis has been known and used for medicinal purposes for millennia, and was a recognized pharmaceutical during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Legislation in the early 20th century criminalized cannabis due to its psychoactive properties and abuse potential.

Recent research and changes in legislation have opened the potential of cannabis-derived compounds for the relief of specific symptoms, namely for pain, stress, and inflammation. Commercial CBD compounds for chronic pain relief are tightly regulated and may only contain less than 0.3% of THC (the psychoactive compound that is responsible for the feeling of being “high”).

How does CBD work in the body?

Everyone has an Endocannabinoid system in their body. This is a system of receptors that respond to the presence of a variety of compounds from both inside and outside of the body. Endocannabinoids are produced as needed within the body and contribute to the regulation of a range of bodily functions such as sleep, appetite, metabolism, and motor control. It is also partially responsible for the management of stress, inflammation, and the function of muscle, skin and nerves. In the event of injury or stress, it is believed that the Endocannabinoid System (ECS) is largely responsible for returning balance to the body. The introduction of cannabis-based compounds such as Cannabidiol (CBD) is believed to assist in this process.

The Entourage Effect

When exploring CBD oil for chronic pain relief, consider full-spectrum CBD products. There are nearly 100 identified compounds in cannabis-derived products, each with different properties. The cumulative, combined effect of these compounds within the body is known as the Entourage Effect.

There is a growing body of research examining the efficacy of CBD specifically for cancer and arthritis pain. According to a study by the National Center for Biotechnology Information Rats with laboratory-induced arthritis responded positively to a topical application of CBD oil. There was a reduction in inflammation and pain in the affected joints. This suggests possible positive results in humans.

In the journal Frontiers in Pharmacology a study discussed how despite the need for additional research, CBD was effective in contributing to pain relief in specific settings.

When considering CBD products, speak with a trusted professional and insist on products that are laboratory-tested and free of pesticides.

How Does CBD Oil Help With Arthritis Pain

How Does CBD Oil Help With Arthritis Pain

Arthritis sufferers know how difficult it can be to find dependable relief from bone and joint pain. If you are suffering from arthritis, you may have tried any number of pain relief regimens that include medication, physical therapy, and exercise. These treatment options are often effective, but they may not be entirely sufficient to provide satisfactory relief from arthritis pain and inflammation.

Arthritis is generally classified into two main types of arthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis is identified as an autoimmune disorder, where a person’s immune system attacks their joints, resulting in pain and inflammation. It commonly occurs in the extremities of sufferers and can result in pain, inflammation, and stiffness in the joints of the wrists, ankles, hands and feet.

Osteoarthritis is a condition that results from the degeneration of the cartilage of the joints and between bones, causing pain and stiffness. It results in inflammation, often affecting hip and knee joints. It is often a common cause of spinal pain, especially in seniors or people who suffer from injuries or repetitive-use strain.

Once considered an experimental treatment, the use of CBD for chronic pain relief, recent studies have discovered that CBD treatment could provide a viable option for sufferers in search of additional treatment options for symptoms associated with arthritis.

What is CBD? CBD is an extract from the hemp plant, a botanical cousin of marijuana. But unlike marijuana, current law dictates that CBD compounds contain small trace amounts (less than 0.3%) of the psychoactive compound (THC) that causes the “high” from marijuana.

How does CBD work? Every person has a system of cannabinoid receptors in their body, which is a part of the endocannabinoid system. Within the endocannabinoid system, CBD directly activates serotonin receptors, and this system plays a role in the regulation of specific physical and neurological functions such as pain response, sleep, anxiety, inflammation, mood, nausea, and appetite. In addition to providing relief for arthritis symptoms, there are federally-funded studies underway that may show promise of the efficacy of CBD in combating specific cancers.

As of yet, no serious negative health concerns have been associated with moderate doses of CBD. It is however recommended that CBD not be taken with any medication containing corticosteroids. There are other common medications that should not be taken with CBD. As a supplement, CBD is not designed to replace an existing arthritis care regimen. Consult your physician before beginning or discontinuing any medication.

So how can you find the best CBD for knee pain relief? Back pain? Inflammation and fatigue? CBD is available in a variety of strengths and delivery methods. There are tinctures, oils, and ointments, creams, gummies, and roll-ons. There is a CBD product available to suit a wide variety of needs depending on your specific preferences. Many are turning to CBD oil for arthritis pain relief

CBD has been a source of relief from the pain and inflammation associated with arthritis and has been instrumental in reducing the sleeplessness and anxiety created by those symptoms. An informational session with a trained CBD pharmacist may be your next step in finding additional relief from arthritis discomfort.

CBD FOR RELIEVING TRAVEL STRESS IN DOGS

Just like humans, dogs can develop signs and symptoms of stress for various reasons. Loud noises, such as fireworks and thunderstorms, can be a source of stress for dogs. Dogs may also display signs of distress when faced with the unknown or unusual or if they associate a thing or an experience with an unpleasant memory or event.

Unlike humans, dogs are not necessarily able to express themselves as clearly as humans can. Although they often express their feelings of fear and stress, it is often unclear what the source of worry and stress might be. While most dogs enjoy a ride in the family car, it may be stressful for others. Some dogs may shake or whine when encountering car travel. Some may refuse to get in on their own. Your dog may urinate or chew themselves nervously.

If your dog has developed a fear of riding in the car, it could result from motion sickness, a fairly common occurrence. Some dogs may associate a ride in the car with a visit to the vet’s office- which is stressful for many pets.

To help relieve the stress and stress associated with car travel for dogs, you can place a favorite toy or blanket in the car. You can also have the dog travel in their crate. This is helpful for crate-trained dogs. You can also cover the crate to reduce the amount of visual stimulus. To relieve the fear that your dog may have of an unpleasant destination, short trips with a favorite toy or treat as a reward at the end may help to create more pleasant memories associated with car travel. Quiet music or calm conversation may help soothe your dog’s stress. Positive reinforcement and a peaceful demeanor are a big plus.

If you have identified the source of your dog’s distress as fear or stress of riding in the car or motion sickness (especially in puppies who have yet to develop the motion-stabilizing ability in their ears), perhaps it’s time to consider CBD products as a stress reliever for your dog. CBD products for dogs are available as treats or as drops.

There is a growing movement in pet care that supports using hemp (botanically related to marijuana) products, and CBD (Cannabidiol) extracts in treating certain specific conditions in dogs. CBD has been found to be beneficial in relieving stress and stress, motion sickness, and joint and bone pain in dogs.

All mammals have an endocannabinoid system (ECS) in their bodies, and the ECS regulates every metabolic process in an animal’s body, both human and canine alike. A balanced ECS will help control stress, pain, stress, depression, and inflammation. CBD helps manage stress by changing the brain’s serotonin receptors. CBD is one of 113 identified cannabinoids found in cannabis plants (including the psychoactive ingredient tetrahydrocannabinol) and can account for as much as 40% of the plant’s extract.

When considering CBD products for your dog’s stress, it is important to remember that THC (the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana) can be harmful to dogs, so a THC-free CBD product is recommended.

For dosing, it is recommended that when choosing CBD dog treats for stress and pain relief, they receive between 1 and 5 mg per 10 lbs of your dog’s weight. This is simply a guideline. Please consult your veterinarian for specific dosage information, as with all medications and supplements.

For a wide selection of hemp products for your pet, specifically CBD treats for dogs, please visit The Hemp Pharmacist. If you have any questions or are interested in CBD products for your pet, please call 757-577-1024
